How A Website Creates Chanel

April 21, 2010

In fashion there are many brands that assert to differentiate themselves from all the rest.  I feel like the Chanel brand itself is one of the leaders in originality. It creates a symbolic look. The unique sense of style that is instantly associated with each brand creates an image for whoever wears the brand.  A lot of designers began to add logo’s to their brands even  before 1880’s.  I chose Chanel because of it’s classic look. It’s black and white logo symbolize a whole lifestyle to many fashionistas.
Chanel's elements
Chanel introduced her brand in the 1920s without her logo. Then in the 1930’s she began to introduce her logo. Her layered C. Her logo is simple, however it creates a very classic and uniform look. This black and white logo is often seen on their t-shirts, purses, socks, and miscellaneous other designer goods.

On Chanel’s website (www.Chanel.com) it asserts these assumptions. It’s logo gives it a look of simplisticy, just black and white and double c’s. The store creates a look of uniform with the matching Chanel on each of the banners . The flash and multimedia elements helps compliment the website with the swirl stairs. The art noveau stairs and flowy architecture create this image of simplicity and elegance. Each image are just overall flattering. his website is amongst the best to help create the brand.

It creates this brand and dream of this. If you walk in public and see the black and white, it is considered very formal. These elements are what Chanel tries to play up.

Chanel is furthermore incorporated with a sense of class and elegance that other brands can barely compare to.  They have a look of which their wearers are bound to wear and how they are supposed to look.  When celebrities wear them, they generally go for the very classic black and white look.

As shown in the picture is Nicole Kidman, the face of Chanel from 2009.  Nicole Kidman is shown in a very classic pose showing off her Chanel dress. Her hair done very simply. This is the repetition look of Chanel, the posing, the small structure of Nicole. This is is what it is like to be the double “C” in Chanel. It is asserted all throughout the website of Chanel.

In this assertion of the Chanel logo and how it relates as whole is that an image (or the colors) and everything incorporated into a lifestyle. It shows that a lot of multimedia events can take place and even give life to a brand. Being a fashion design major, I wanted to incorporate it to relate to my major and future profession. The way colors coordinate and overall create the brand.

Pop References In Gaga’s “Telephone”

April 21, 2010

Lady Gaga is one of the most popular trends world-wide right now. She is a musician that accentuates herself using tons of pop media. People love her not only for her eccentric designs but her music videos. In her music video, Telephone, Lady Gaga is in prison for a crime she committed. It is here where she uses multiple pop references to bring more attention to herself and to create an image that she was lacking in her “Just Dance” days.

Lady Gaga begins in her music video with the police woman mocking the reference from a huge rumor. From there on, pop references make their way into her videos.

Pop references are one of the most popular versions of pop art that are around. They are things that everyone can relate to. Tons of artists have used this idea to help create a sense of an image that they wanted for publicity. Lady Gaga is definitely inspired from pop artist, Andy Warhol. As he did a very similar career move while using pop references in his art.

They were first introduced in the 1960’s with Andy Warhol. It was said that he had over 100 boxes of Coca Cola cans and even more crates of Campbell soup. This idea that he created and even quoted in the 60’s: “A coke is a coke and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.”

It seems that Miss. Gaga is now rolling with the idea of using pop art as a medium in her music and music videos. In “Telephone”, she has pop icon references throughout the entire film. These pop references create a world that exists in our own, it almost makes this pop culture that seems flashy, intricate, and vibrant. There are over twenty-three different pop references in her latest music video, some of these include: Kodak, Kill Bill, Coca Cola, Virgin Mobile, and more.

All of these brands that were included may as well be as endorsements, however, instead of trying to sell the “brand”, they are trying to sell the idea that Lady Gaga uses these products and uses these ideals every day. Whether or not she does or doesn’t– it creates a sense of pop art overall. Lady Gaga almost can use these references to her advantage, because she is trying to create such an image that will enable her to not only make a couple extra dollars from endorsements but also throw it in to create a Pop reference.

The placement of each of these pieces in the music video are more or less to aid her on her and her “Bettie Page” Beyoncě throughout their journey of slaughtering Beyoncě’s abusive boyfriend and escaping to freedom. If it were any other artist it would have seemed like they thrown useless products in just to create more money

Lady Gaga knows exactly what she wants to market herself as and for this, she definitely gets a standing ovation.

The New Leader in Indie Artwork World

April 21, 2010

Ebay may as well be running for their money—There is a new website that is focused on selling individual artists’ works. Ebay is one of the most successful websites known to help selling merchandise. However, they had a nitch in their market. There wasn’t really a way to grab the attention of those who are making and creating art. If you were to search paintings, you would get semi-professional art as well as tons of prints. There wasn’t much of a way to differentiate between the
two.
Etsy: The New EbayThere is a new website that I feel is focusing a little more on ‘indie’ art. Etsy (http://www.etsy.com/) is going to rise as a leader in the selling of customizable art because of it’s focus on the artists and their works.
Etsy has a comfortable atmosphere to the website, it really gathers and organizes the art by specific type and medium. I think that this allows the viewer who is looking for the art to be able to pick apart what it is they are looking for. It really helps the seller even to have a place to put their art. This makes it more accessible to other people instead of posting something in a random subcategory on Ebay or even in the broad “arts and crafts” on Craigslist..
Another reason why I feel like this website is essentially one of the most useful is because they keep everything very neutral. They keep it very user-friendly for older and younger. It really allows people to view the website and not have to worry about the bright greens or any other annoying colors that may be an eye-sore for those who are older.
The approach they used for the images that aren’t items on the website are very simple. If you look at a Hallmark card, it looks completely copied off of it. It really kind of utilizes these feeling into the website, giving it a very “art”esque feel to it. Hallmark Card
I think that Etsy is going to really be the face of independent art in the semi-near future. It is going to inspire people to want to make art and want to post it to sell it. For 3$ to post something, what artist wouldn’t want their stuff be a little more accessible?
